Surrounded by the splendour of Cumbria’s Fells, the thriving Market town of Kendal disguises its historic past. The remains of its Norman Castle locate one of the original Roman camps that guarded the route to the Scottish border.

The castle was the birthplace and childhood home of Katherine Parr, sixth wife of Henry VIII. The 13th century parish church is one of the largest in England. Individual shops of character many concealed in numbered yards tucked away down alleyways provide a pleasant contrast to the chain stores found on most high streets. A wide range of restaurants cafes and pubs offer a traditional Cumbrian hospitality.

The Brewery Arts centre offers a wide range of entertainment including theatre, cinema, and live music.

The medieval Sizergh Castle and Elizabethan Levens Hall are recommended visits close to Helsington Laithes Manor.
